Middle school is both an exciting and challenging time for learners. Middle schoolers are transitioning into adolescence, and have unique strengths, needs, and challenges. They are characterized by a need to explore a variety of interests, and are eager for opportunities to connect their learning in the classroom to its practical application in life and work. Our D51 Learning Model meets these needs through honoring each learner's interest, background, and learning style. We know that middle school is also a time where our learners are seeking their own unique identity. A classroom environment of trust, equity, and inclusivity is key. Learning experiences designed to foster student agency are at the heart of our D51 Learning Model and middle school educators in D51 focus on providing opportunities for their learners to contribute to the design of their learning experiences and pathways.
