Weekly Superintendent Update, Sept. 24

You may have seen in the news or on Facebook this week that some inappropriate questions were accidentally posted on Schoology as part of a middle school English Language Arts assignment about character development. Some of the questions were not age- or grade-appropriate, and we apologize to any child that saw them before the post was taken off of Schoology.

While the questions were posted in error when an unedited file was uploaded to Schoology, rather than an edited document that did not include these questions, this incident has led to a greater conversation about what content should be shared in class. We are committed to working with teachers, principals and schools to determine guidelines about age- and grade-appropriate content and conversations in class, and will update you on the progress of this work in the future.

Human Resources Job Fair

Like many employers nationwide, School District 51 is seeking new talent. While we have been successful at filling several open positions, there are still many openings in numerous departments. If you or someone you know is looking for a job, please come to the D51 Career Fair on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at R-5 High School, 455 N. 22nd St. Come learn about jobs in our custodial, nutrition services, special education, and other departments, and learn how you can impact the lives of children. You can also find job postings any time at d51schools.org.

Even if you’re a current employee looking to earn new certifications or degrees, come to the fair to speak with representatives from Colorado Mesa University, Colorado Christian University, Grand Canyon University, and Colorado River BOCES!

COVIDCheck rapid testing update

As I mentioned in last week’s email, the COVIDCheck Colorado testing site in the parking lot at Fruita 8/9 is no longer offering Cue rapid tests. Thursday, Sept. 30, will be the last day that Cue rapid tests are available at the COVIDCheck Colorado testing site in the parking lot at Central High School. For the time being, Cue rapid tests will continue to be offered at the walk-in COVIDCheck Colorado site at Colorado Mesa University. We also hope to have more information soon about Binax rapid testing at schools through a partnership with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Board Coffee scheduled

Some of you may remember that the D51 Board of Education hosted Board Coffee events in the past to have an informal, small group conversation and a cup of coffee with constituents. I am happy to announce that the board will be bringing back those events, starting with a Board Coffee at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23. The Board Coffee will take place at Colorado Mesa University, in Room 222 in the University Center. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Panorama Reminder

The parent/guardian Panorama survey, open Sept. 20-30, gives all families the opportunity to share anonymous feedback with District 51 and their child’s school regarding family-school relationships, parent involvement in education, school climate and culture, and your child’s sense of belonging at school. Survey results will help schools and the district improve school culture and help identify trends and goals for the upcoming Strategic Plan. If you have not already taken the survey, please click here to do so.

Bond Measure Information

As we draw closer to the time when ballots will be mailed, I’m receiving questions about where people can find information about the upcoming bond measure to rebuild Grand Junction High School. Ballot language for the 2021 measure as well as information about 2017 Bond Measure and Mill Levy Override spending can be found at d51schools.org/resources/bond_and_mill. In addition, tours of Grand Junction High School will be offered at noon on Saturday, Oct. 2, and 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Final Listening Session for Strategic Plan

A reminder that Wednesday, Sept. 29, is your last chance to participate in a D51 Strategic Plan Listening Session. The session will take place on Zoom from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. To register, click here. A sincere thank you to everyone who attended the first four listening sessions - your feedback will be integral to planning and decision making in the future!

School Board Vacancy

Our search for a new school board member to fill the Director District B vacancy continues, with materials due by 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday, Sept. 28. Please click here to learn more about who is eligible and how to apply. The board will select candidates to interview at their Oct. 5 Work Session and interview finalists at a special meeting on Oct. 12.

Treatment of Staff

Finally, we have some staff, in particular nurses and front office staff at the school and district level, who have had parents and community members yelling at them in person and over the phone in recent weeks. I know we’re all a little fatigued and frustrated for various reasons right now, but these staff members are just doing their jobs and trying to assist you. Please be kind, and know that they are valued members of our D51 community, just like you.
