Weekly Superintendent Update, March 5
Posted on 03/05/2021

Dear District 51 Staff and Families,

As a reminder, you can find current information about COVID-19 cases and quarantines in our schools on our D51 Data Dashboard. The information is updated on each student contact day.

Kindergarten Registration

Children who will be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2021, are invited to register for the Fall of 2021-22 school year through our online registration process. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, online registration will open Monday, April 19, and run throughout the month of April and May. Parents will use ParentVUE Online registration for students entering Kindergarten in 2021-22. More information will be sent to families soon.

Superintendent Succession Plan

I want to congratulate my colleague, Dr. Brian Hill, on being selected by the D51 Board of Education to serve as D51’s next superintendent! While I will not be retiring until the end of the next school year (June 2022), the board wanted to get a head start on securing my successor. There are many superintendent searches going on in Colorado right now, and the board wanted to ensure a smooth transition, and to leave the district in the best hands possible after my departure. Dr. Hill is an excellent choice and quickly emerged as the most qualified candidate during an internal search. He currently serves as my assistant superintendent and came to D51 in 2019 with more than a decade of experience in teaching and school and district administration in Austin Independent School District in Austin, Texas.

Athletics Update including Middle School Sports!

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has approved the Colorado High School Activities Association Season C sports calendar, which will include high school girls volleyball and boys soccer. Practice for these two seasons starts Monday, March 8. After working with the Mesa County Public Health, we are excited to announce that we will also offer two middle school sports this spring. Girls volleyball will start on Wednesday, March 10, and boys basketball will begin on April 19.  With the current sport approvals from CDPHE, we were limited to offering only boys/girls basketball, volleyball or wrestling. Volleyball and boys basketball were chosen since these two sports have the highest participation numbers.

Participation fees and athletic clearance forms need to be turned in prior to students starting practices. Schedules and clearance form links are listed below.

Finally, I want to acknowledge Women’s History Month and Irish Heritage Month! Each month, our diversity team is highlighting different groups and their contributions to our world. Click here for more information about the emphases this month.

Sincerely,

Diana
