Dr. Sirko

You made it - it’s the end of the second quarter! I want to congratulate you all on a great first half of the year and look forward to all of the great things that await us in 2022! I know it has been challenging at times, but you have all done an amazing job of staying focused on the importance of our mission and educating our students!

I hope all of you have plans for a relaxing, memorable Winter Break. While there have been highs and lows, celebrations and challenges throughout the year, it is important to take this time to reflect on what is truly important, practice self care, enjoy time with your families and friends and soak in the joy of the season.

COVID Protocols Update

Members of the D51 Board of Education and D51 leadership have been working closely with Mesa County Public Health to evaluate our current COVID-19 protocols and see whether any adjustments to the protocols should be made. Information on any changes to current COVID protocols will be shared with families in the near future.

Board Coffee Reminder

Join the D51 School Board this Saturday for a Board Coffee starting at 9 a.m. in Room 222 of the Colorado Mesa University Center. This is the third Board Coffee meeting this year, and a great opportunity to speak with board members in an informal setting.

Curriculum Adoption Open Houses

School District 51 is in the process of adopting a new curriculum resource for middle school social studies classrooms. The selection team aims to make a recommendation to the D51 School Board in the Spring of 2022. The community is invited to view the resources under consideration and offer feedback to the selection team at open houses on Jan. 11 and Jan. 13. Click here to learn more about the open houses, and click here and scroll down to see all of the many curriculum resource adoptions made possible in recent years by the 2017 Mill Levy Override.

CHSAA Hall of Fame

Congratulations to our D51 Athletic Director, Paul Cain, who has been elected to the Colorado HIgh School Activities Association Hall of Fame! So well deserved!! Paul has worked tirelessly for D51 coaches and athletes and was an athlete himself in high school, college, and as a pro basketball player in Europe.  He has worked in athletics administration for nearly three decades. He will be officially inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame in a ceremony in April.  We greatly appreciate you, Paul, for all that you do!

Food Resources Over Break

Winter Break can be difficult for some of our families who rely on school to provide free breakfast and lunch for their children on weekdays. If you are in need of food assistance during the break, please review this one-page guide from 211 to find boxed food to take home and in-person meal service. Resources for finding winter clothing are also listed in the guide.

COVIDCheck Colorado holiday hours

All COVIDCheck Colorado testing sites, including the one in the parking lot at Fruita 8/9 School, will close at noon on Dec. 24 and will be closed on Dec. 25. The sites will also close at noon on Dec. 31 and be closed Jan. 1. I’m also excited to share that COVIDCheck Colorado’s contract with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has been extended, so we will have local testing sites through at least March 2022.

Bond Executive Committee Survey

The Bond Executive Committee plays a key role in the process of building a new Grand Junction High School funded by the 2021 bond measure. The committee is seeking three new members from the community. If you are interested in being considered for the committee, please fill out a survey (click here) before Dec. 31, 2021.
