This is a truly wonderful time of the year! While some think December is all about winding down before the semester’s end, students and staff are very busy putting on plays, concerts, holiday projects and events, taking and grading finals, and gearing up for our winter sports: basketball, wrestling, and girls swimming. I encourage you all to go watch some of these exciting events!!

This week, we’ve had lots of
Hour of Code activities, which inspire students to learn how to code through fun games and activities. Hour of Code is just one of many great STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) opportunities in District 51!

Another one of our STEAM activities is FIRST Lego League Challenge. Congratulations to our Mesa View Elementary students who are competing in the Colorado FIRST Lego League Challenge State Championship this weekend! The team has spent months building, programming, and perfecting a Lego robot that has to perform a series of tasks to earn points for the team. Good luck at State!

Dual Immersion, New Emerson Lotteries

The kindergarten lottery processes for Dual Immersion Academy and New Emerson STEAM School will take place in January instead of February this year. DIA and New Emerson are two of our specialized schools, with Dual Immersion Academy offering instruction in English and Spanish, and New Emerson focusing on science-, technology-, engineering-, art-, and math-focused curriculum.

Anyone interested in the DIA or New Emerson kindergarten lottery process can pick up and drop off an application at the corresponding school between Jan. 5 and Jan. 12 (parents/guardians trying to enroll a sibling of a current DIA or New Emerson student have a different application period, which ends Dec. 16). The lottery drawings will take place Jan. 14 for New Emerson and Jan. 18 for DIA. Click here for more details.

School Board meeting location change

The Dec. 14 D51 School Board meeting will take place in the CMU Ballroom instead of the Harry Butler Board Room, at the request of the board so we can more easily space people out for safety. The CMU Ballroom is located on the second floor of the Colorado Mesa University Center. The meeting agenda will be posted here.
