Weekly Superintendent Update: April 9

Weekly Superintendent Update: April 9
Posted on 04/09/2021
Updates on COVID-19 protocols, summer learning opportunities, and more!

Grand Junction, CO - We have many exciting things going on in the district right now. Our OWL (Outdoor Wilderness Lab) program has reopened and is hosting day camps for our sixth-graders to learn about science and nature in hands-on ways. Clifton Elementary School showed off its newly remodeled library with a ribbon cutting after school on Wednesday (Thank you to Academy Mortgage, the D51 Foundation, and everyone who sponsored and worked on the remodel!). We’re also busy preparing for one of my favorite events - Superintendent Scholars - which will take place later this month and honor 168 seniors who earned a 4.0 or higher grade point average throughout high school.

With so much going on, it can be easy to forget to fill out your Symptom Tracker. Please keep checking in each morning here. In addition, visit our D51 Data Dashboard for the latest information about COVID-19 numbers in District 51.

Mask Protocol Update

Shortly after last Friday’s weekly update was emailed to you, Gov. Polis extended the statewide mask order through May 3. The order requires continued use of face coverings in schools. You can find more information about the order extension here. As stated in last week’s letter, D51 will continue with current COVID-19 protocols through the end of the school year.

Summer Extension Learning Program

This year, summer learning is back! Summer Extension, as we’re calling it, will be offered in all schools. Students can catch up on math and literacy at the elementary and middle school level and work on credit recovery at the high school level. Busing will be provided at hubs around the valley; free, pre-packaged breakfast and lunch will be provided; and mental health services will be available at select schools.

Summer Extension will run Monday through Thursday June 2-29, and we are hoping to serve up to 3,000 students using federal funds specifically for academic remediation. Please contact your principal or any member of the Summer Extension Team if you are interested in enrolling your child.

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!
