Weekly Superintendent Update 1-22

January 22 Weekly Superintendent Update

Dear District 51 Staff and Families:

As a reminder, you can find current information about COVID-19 cases and quarantines in our schools on our D51 Data Dashboard. The information is updated on each student contact day.

COVID-19 Vaccination

We are working with local health partners to begin offering free, voluntary vaccines to our staff, prioritizing high risk individuals and campus-level staff so we can increase our chances of keeping schools open for in-person learning. We’ll be sharing more information with staff as it becomes available.

COVID-19 Testing

We are continuing to offer free, voluntary testing for students, staff, and the community through COVIDCheck Colorado. The sites at Grand Mesa Middle School and Fruita Monument High School are open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both sites offer the nasal swab, and they have recently added a saliva test option. This might be an easier option than the nasal swab. If you opt for the saliva test, please do not eat or drink 30 minutes before your test. Students and staff can register for a test using this link, and the community can register using this link

Quarantine Changes

As a reminder, the quarantine time frame is no longer 14 days. If you have come into contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you can get tested on day 6 (day of exposure is day 0). If your test is negative and you have not developed symptoms, you may return to work or school after day 8, as long as you submit your negative test results.

Students can submit their test results through ParentVue. Please check out this guide for how to upload your results. Please ensure that you submit your negative test results before returning to school or work. If you choose not to get tested, you may return after day 10, as long as you are not showing symptoms.

2021-22 Calendar

On Tuesday, the D51 School Board adopted the calendar for the 2021-22 school year. The calendar begins classes on Aug. 9, 2021 for grades 1-12 and on Aug. 11 for kindergarten, and dismisses for summer break on the afternoon of May 19, 2022. Click here to view the adopted calendar. School-specific versions will be available soon, as well as a translated version.

Sports Update

We are thrilled to be able to offer winter sports at the high school level! As we shared with you last week, you will see some differences in this years’ sports activities. Basketball players, for example, will need to wear masks. The district has purchased special masks for this purpose. Click here to learn more about the Breathe Clear Face Mask.

An additional change to winter sports this year is that we will not be able to have spectators at games. We know you will miss seeing your child play in person, so we have purchased Pixellot Camera Systems for all high school gyms and will stream all contests via the NFHS Network on Vimeo. Click here to see a schedule.

The D51 Board of Education again discussed potential boundary changes at their business meeting on Tuesday, and have added one more potential change: switching homes in the triangle bordered by Highway 6&50, 25 Road, and either G Road or I-70 from Fruita Middle School to West Middle School attendance boundaries. This possible change will be discussed at a Zoom meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 (email [email protected] for login information). To see all potential boundary changes, visit the Proposed School Boundaries page at d51schools.org. The board plans to discuss boundaries again at their Feb. 2 meeting and possibly vote at their Feb. 16 meeting.
