School Board vacancy application period extended

Grand Junction, CO – Applications are being accepted through 4 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2020, for the now-vacant Director District C seat on the District 51 School Board. The application period was set to end March 23, but has been extended due to the COVID-19 closure.

Those who wish to apply for the vacant seat must submit a resume and cover letter, as well as a copy of their driver's license for verification purposes to Bridget Story at [email protected]

Board members declared the vacancy at their March 3 Work Session following the resignation of board member John Williams. Mr. Williams resigned before a final round of interviews for an open position in the district: general counsel. 

Interested applicants must be a registered elector for District 51 (i.e., be registered to vote within D51 boundaries) for at least 12 consecutive months and currently reside specifically in Director District C. District C is generally between 26 ½ and 29 roads in central and northern Grand Junction. A detailed map is available at Additionally, candidates are ineligible if they have been convicted of a sexual offense against a child. 

The remaining board members must fill the vacancy within 60 days of declaring it, according to Colorado Revised Statutes. Board members will interview qualified applicants April 8-9. The person they appoint to the vacant seat will serve on the board until the next school board election in November 2021. The appointee can choose to run in the 2021 election or not.  

Most months August through June, board members attend two regularly scheduled meetings (one on the first Tuesday of the month and one on the third Tuesday of the month), plus any special meetings that are scheduled. Typical board duties include engaging with stakeholders, approving calendars and budget, creating community partnerships, hearing updates about and making suggestions for district programs, and ensuring the district is meeting key objectives and benchmarks.  

Board members are not paid for their service. They can serve up to two terms, each four years in length. The appointee for this seat will be able to serve up to two terms in addition to his or her service between this spring and fall 2021.
