Grand Junction, CO – School District 51 launched a bond and mill levy override information and timeline page shortly after voters approved 2017 ballot measures 3A and 3B. Now that bond and override dollars are being spent, the District 51 Finance Department has launched a new element to the site that can be used to track quarterly spending as it happens.

This new element is a colorful, interactive way to keep our promise of transparency to voters and show that money is being spent responsibly on items listed in ballot language. The 2017 bond measure ballot language specified that taxpayer dollars would be used for technology purchases, including Chromebooks and charging carts; Priority 1 maintenance; safety projects; and construction of a new Orchard Mesa Middle School and gyms at Dual Immersion Academy and Palisade High School.

The 2017 mill levy override is for curriculum updates, professional development, and continuing maintenance projects. Mill levy override money is also being used to hire four technology support positions and pay for five school days, bringing the D51 calendar closer to state and national averages.

Bond Progress so far:

  • Maintenance and safety projects starting this summer in 30 District 51 schools.
  • Ground broken on Palisade and Dual Immersion gyms May 24 and 25, respectively.
  • Chromebooks (6,810 for students, 2,258 for educators) and charging carts delivered to schools this month.
  • Orchard Mesa Middle School groundbreaking scheduled for August 2018.
  • Mill Levy Progress so far:

  • Calendar days added to the 2018-19 school calendar
  • Four in-school technology support techs hired
  • New first- and second-grade science, ninth-grade environmental science, and fourth- and fifth-grade classroom library materials scheduled for implementation this fall.

Financial transparency information on the site is arranged by quarter based on the district’s fiscal year, which runs July 1 through June 30. Those checking out the site should note that first quarter for the district is July through September, second quarter is October through December, third quarter is January through March, and fourth quarter is April through June.
