Grand Junction, CO - D51 parents and guardians interested in School of Choice for the 2022-23 school year can submit applications between 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24 and 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4. The School of Choice process usually takes place in March, but is being moved up this year to give schools more time to prepare for projected enrollment and staff buildings adequately before the start of the next school year.

What is School of Choice?

School of Choice is an option for families who wish to send their children to a school that is outside their home’s school attendance boundaries. School of Choice does NOT apply to the following schools and programs, which have their own enrollment/application processes:
*
Schools with lottery systems (Dual Immersion Academy, New Emerson)
*
Academic Options schools (Grand River Academy, R-5 High)
*
Academic Options programs (Career Center, Summit School Program, Valley)
*
D51 charter schools (Independence Academy, Juniper Ridge Community School, Mesa Valley Community School)
*
Programs at D51 schools, such as International Baccalaureate at Palisade High; STEM at Central High; the Challenge Program at East Middle School; or P-TECH at CHS, Grand Junction High, or Career Center.
*
State charter schools, private schools, or homeschooling

How does it work?

When the School of Choice window opens, parents will use their ParentVue account to complete the application. Parents may also use the d51schools.org site and submit their applications electronically through the the School of Choice button on the front page that will link to the application Jan. 24 - Feb. 4.

School of Choice applications are time-stamped and approved on a first-come, first-served basis. Each school offers spots based on projected enrollment and capacity. Some schools are not able to offer any spots in certain grades or in the entire school if they are at or over capacity.

Applications must be filled out online using ParentVUE. If you do not have a ParentVUE account, create one by Jan. 24 (please contact your child’s current school if you have questions). If you do not have access to internet service, you can visit the second floor of the Emerson Building at 930 Ute Ave. between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on weekdays or your child’s school office to use their internet.

When will I hear back?

Principals will notify applicants starting at 4 p.m. on Feb. 11 whether their application has been accepted or denied. If you are accepted through School of Choice, you must sign and return a letter of commitment no later than Feb. 18 in order to be accepted into the receiving school. If a spot opens up because someone has not committed to a school to which they were accepted by the end of the day on Feb. 18, those spots can be filled in order of receipt from other applicants by Feb. 23.
