calendar 2018-19Grand Junction, CO – The District 51 Board of Education adopted a new calendar for the 2018-19 school year tonight, March 6, 2018, during a board meeting in the Harry Butler Board Room.

The First Day of School for students will be Aug. 15, 2018, and the Last Day of School for students will be May 30, 2019.

Features of the new calendar include:

Five school days added through the mill levy override that voters approved last fall. (Two days were added in the 2017-18 calendar through an agreement last year between the School Board and Mesa Valley Education Association. The board and the teacher’s association agreed to continue the two days and add three more in 2018-19 if funding became available through a mill levy override or other means.)

Days off for students but not staff (i.e. conferences, teacher planning days, work days, and in-service days) moved almost exclusively to Mondays to be in agreement with holiday days off and provide continuity.

An additional teacher in-service day on Oct. 29, 2018.

The calendar committee decided not to make sweeping changes given the short amount of time between the passage of the mill levy override and a timely adoption of an adjusted 2018-19 calendar. However, a survey this spring followed by focus groups later in 2018 will aim to improve the calendar in years to come and address solutions proposed by various members of the school and business community. Survey and focus group results will help a group of D51 staff, parents, and community members shape the 2019-20 calendar. Hilltop Senior Director Cathy Story will facilitate the calendar process.
