Orchard Ave. playground taking shape thanks to GOCO grant

Orchard Avenue Elementary School received a Great Outdoors Colorado grant earlier this year to improve their playground and add new features. Students, parents, and staff voted on a list of potential improvements and features for the playground. Favorites included exercise stations, a play structure, a learning garden, and a weather station.

While these new features have not yet been purchased or installed, the playground received significant TLC over the summer, including asphalt replacement, removing concrete barriers, replacing pea gravel with wood chips and crushed granite, and installing a new drainage system. Already, the play yard is looking much better. Here’s more information from Orchard Ave. students Jaxxson, Julian, and Kali:

Plan Introduction

Hi, we are three of the Orchard Ave. Elementary GOCO representatives. Today we want to talk to you about our playground, where we started, where are now, and future plans for our playground.

Where We Started

We used to have pea gravel on the ground before we had wood chips. We didn’t have any concrete that ramped up to the breeze way. We had concrete barriers around our playground. This is what our playground used to look like.

Where We Are Now

In this current period, we have replaced the pea gravel with wood chips and crushed granite. We also removed some of the concrete barriers, added pathways to our breezeway, moved the garden fence outwards, and resurfaced the black top.

Our Future Plans

In the future, we will add fitness stations, a rock and mineral garden, a green house, improved garden beds, shade structures, a stone seating area and a plaza under our trees.

In conclusion, we would like to welcome you to come to observe our project and we hope you come again to see our new and improved school. Thank you.
