Grand Junction, CO – Each eighth-grade student at Grand Mesa Middle School is participating in the Great 8th Debate - Adaptation Madness starting this week.

Each Grand Mesa eighth-grader chose an organism to research and defend during the debate, which blends science and English Language Arts learning. For science, the students complete extensive research to determine what adaptation attributes make their species superior. For English Language Arts, the students refine their research, write a thesis, state three solid claims, back their thinking with sited evidence, and write their findings in a classic debate format. Each student is informed of the species that their debate competitor will be defending just before debate day. They then complete a little more research to develop counter arguments.

Through this great debate, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge they gained through research, thesis writing, claim development and authentic evidence, as well the art of editing their work to fit into debate format.
