Grand Junction, CO – District 51 School Board members voted unanimously at a board business meeting Tuesday, March 26, 2019, to move Early Release from Wednesdays to Fridays for District 51 elementary schools. The change from Early Release Wednesdays to Early Release Fridays will begin at the start of the 2019-20 school year.

The move preserves the planning time elementary teachers use on Early Release days and responds to parents who have requested that Early Release not happen in the middle of the week.

"What that will do for one year is move early release from Wednesday afternoon to Friday afternoon, and give the District time to continue to look at options to deal with elementary planning time," said D51 School Board President Tom Parrish.

When asked if they would prefer having Early Release on Fridays instead of Wednesdays, 70 percent of people who took a public survey this winter agreed and just 10 percent disagreed with the proposed change.

In addition to the survey, taken by 6,505 people, board members made their decision based on focus groups and research conducted by members of the D51 Calendar Committee.

The board has now achieved their three top-priority goals for the 2019-20 calendar:

  1. Address Early Release Wednesdays
  2. Have later start times for middle and high schools (board members voted March 5 to recommend all schools start at or after 8 a.m.)
  3. Decrease the number of fragmented weeks (the board adopted a 2019-20 calendar at their Feb. 5 meeting that halves the number of weeks with at least one day but fewer than five days, going from 18 fragmented weeks in 2017-18 to nine in 2018-19).
