D51 superintendent announces leadership structure changes

Grand Junction, CO – A more streamlined chain of command is coming to School District 51 in 2018. 

District 51 Superintendent Ken Haptonstall presented the Board of Education with changes he plans to make to the district’s organizational structure at a work session Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018. The new organizational structure will do more with less – offering more support as schools implement the D51 Learning Model of performance-based learning while trimming more than half of executive-level directors.

“The new structure will enable our district to be more efficient and effective. Our focus will be on implementation of the District 51 Learning Model and working toward helping all children accomplish their dreams,” Dr. Haptonstall said.

As classrooms continue to change, so will the duties of leadership. The new roster of leadership roles will retain some jobs while creating or shedding others. All executive director or director level positions – even the ones that currently exist – will be posted during the first half of this year. Those who are hired or re-hired will begin work in the new organizational structure this fall.

The new organizational structure aims to:

  • Be proactive about student needs by having directors focus on preparing students for college and careers and exploring different learning options
  • Help schools adopt and thrive in the D51 Learning Model, now that the foundation has been laid for transformation, with a focus on implementation and choices in education
  • Make sure curriculum and programming are effective by measuring and evaluating results to inform decision-making
  • Offer greater support for student well-being with the creation of a School Counselor Coordinator position
  • Focus on the entire K-12 experience by splitting school director positions by geographical area instead of grade level
  • Support teachers with a team of coordinators and coaches
  • Properly prepare individuals for advancement as senior staff prepare to retire
