Grand Junction, CO – February is prime flu season, and School District 51 and Mesa County Public Health would like to remind all kids and adults to take precautions to protect themselves from illness.

Some helpful tips for staying healthy include:

  • Frequently washing your hands with soap and water, especially before meals.
  • Keeping sick children home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medication).
  • Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or coughing into the elbow of your sleeve.
  • Teaching kids not to share personal items, such as drinks, food, or unwashed utensils.

Schools are doing their part to keep children healthy by encouraging hand washing, having parents pick up children who develop symptoms while at school, and, if absenteeism increases, requesting extra cleaning from custodial staff. However, the best way to avoid the spread of germs at any time of year is to keep children home from school and other public places if they have the following symptoms:

  • A fever of 101 degrees or more, or a fever of 100 degrees accompanied by at least one flu-like symptom, such as cough or sore throat.
  • Vomiting at least twice in the past 24 hours, or vomit that appears green or bloody, vomiting after a recent head injury, or vomiting accompanied by other symptoms.
  • Diarrhea, if your child looks or acts ill, has other symptoms such as fever or abdominal pain, or has blood or mucus in his or her stool.
  • Mouth sores, if accompanied by uncontrollable drooling.
  • Coughing that is severe or uncontrolled, wheezing, or rapid or difficult breathing.
  • A rash that is spreading quickly, comes with a fever or cough or behavior changes, or has open, weeping wounds.
  • A stomach ache that is severe, appears after an injury, or comes with other symptoms, such as fever, diarrhea, or vomiting.
