After reviewing Board Policy IMC-R, Animals on School Premises, the Board of Education and District 51 made a small revision to remove the requirement that students must have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in order to have a service animal on school property. The requirement, listed in section 5a, now states “…students with disabilities and other individuals with disabilities shall be permitted to be accompanied by their Service Animals in all areas of a school or other District facilities where members of the public, participants in the District’s services, programs or activities, or invitees, as relevant, are allowed to go.” This revision brings us in alignment with the new Americans with Disabilities Act legislation.

As a reminder, all individuals with disabilities are permitted to be accompanied by their service animals in all areas of a school’s facilities where students and members of the public are allowed to go.

The updated policy can now be found on the District 51 website. Visit and under the “About Us” section, visit the Board of Education section where you can look up board policies.
