April 30 Superintendent Update

Weekly Superintendent Update, April 30
Posted on 04/30/2021

Dear District 51 Staff and Families,

It’s hard to believe that there are just three weeks of school left in 2021-22! May will be a month filled with graduation ceremonies, Senior Walks, proms, and the culmination of many student projects.

With so much going on, it can be easy to forget protocols, but two recent COVID-19 outbreaks (defined as four or more cases in one setting) in schools on opposite ends of the valley show that the pandemic is not over. Please keep using the Symptom Tracker each morning here and, visit our D51 Data Dashboard for the latest information about COVID-19 numbers in District 51.

I had the privilege of starting this week by celebrating 168 graduating students at the annual Superintendent Scholars celebration. These incredible students maintained a 4.0+ GPA throughout their high school careers, which is even more impressive when you think about them dealing with a global pandemic. I am so proud of all the things our students at all levels are accomplishing, and it’s a great way to kick off graduation season. This has always been my favorite time of year, and I’m looking forward to continuing to celebrate the success of our students.

I want to celebrate each of our staff members who have reached 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 years with D51! We are so thankful for your dedication. I also want to acknowledge the 84 people who have let us know that they are retiring this year. While you will certainly be missed, I want to wish you all the best in your future adventures!

We are in the homestretch of the school year, with only three weeks left! I want to emphasize the importance of finishing well and continuing our practices of keeping ourselves and each other healthy. We are seeing more and more COVID cases in schools, particularly at the elementary level, with a quicker onset of symptoms. Masks are still required in schools as they have been all year. Please stay home if you’re not feeling well, get tested, and help us all finish this school year well.

Teacher and Sub Appreciation Week

May 3-7 is both Teacher Appreciation Week and Substitute Teacher Appreciation Week. All departments, all schools, and all staff have made a tremendous effort to keep schools open this year. Your teachers have demonstrated their dedication and drive more than ever this past year, and substitutes have answered the call time and time again to cover classes when quarantine, illness, or other factors came into play. If you are able, please consider becoming a substitute - we need many more subs in a variety of fields, and signing up would be the ultimate way to show your appreciation next week! Click here to apply.

As a reminder, we are asking for your feedback about the current calendar. Your comments will greatly help the Calendar Committee as they make future school year calendars. You can find this year’s calendar here. Take the survey here (en espanol).

Warm regards,

Dr. Diana Sirko
