School District 51 is seeking the community’s input on the current calendar, which will guide the Calendar Committee’s work when creating the 2021-2022 school year calendar.

As part of their annual review of the school year calendar, the committee is asking families and staff members to rate the current calendar on a scale of 1-5, indicate what is good about the current calendar, and what should change about the current calendar. The survey will be emailed to all D51 families and staff, and can also be found on District 51 social media, or accessed using this link. The survey opens on October 9, and will close on October 25 at 6 p.m. 

In 2018, District 51 assembled a large committee of teachers, principals, support staff, parents, and community members to facilitate an extensive process to address three main concerns: early release for elementary students, start time for secondary students, and the amount of “broken weeks” (weeks with 4 or less days of school) throughout the year. After several community focus group meetings, and three months of committee meetings, the committee presented two calendars to the Board of Education. The final result included the recommendation to move early release from Wednesday to Friday, to begin secondary schools at 8:00 a.m. instead of 7:20 a.m., and reduced the amount of broken weeks from 17 to seven for 2019-2020.

After positive feedback, the calendar committee elected to keep the 2020-2021 school year calendar similar, making minor changes to address issues that came up throughout the year.

This year, the committee is again looking to make minor changes to the calendar to better serve the needs of students and staff. A more in-depth review will happen every few years. The committee hopes that, by making minor adjustments and creating a general outline of future calendars, families can plan ahead knowing that calendars will be similar.

The committee will review the feedback and create a calendar to present to the Board of Education in January.
