Grand Junction, CO – Each year, School District 51 offers tuition-free preschool to 850 children between the ages of three and five. Parents are welcome to come check out preschool classrooms and speak with teachers between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2018. See the list below for locations.

All District 51 preschools are currently accepting applications for 2018-19, but space is limited. Only certain populations fill spots first, and even those who meet eligibility requirements cannot be guaranteed admission. Public preschool programs in Colorado schools first serve children who have special needs, are at-risk for future educational difficulties, or both.

A child is “at-risk” if he or she meets one or more of the following descriptions:

  • The child’s family meets income requirements to get free school meals
  • The child’s family moves a lot or is homeless
  • At least one parent was younger than 18 and unmarried when the child was born
  • At least one parent does not have a high school degree
  • At least one parent has alcohol or drug abuse issues
  • At least one parent is in prison or jail
  • The child lives in foster care
  • The child comes from an abusive home
  • The child has language development needs

The D51 preschool program supports children with creative curriculum and support for social and emotional development. This work has measurable results. In 2016-17, at-risk students in D51 preschool classes improved from the start of the year to the end of the year in social and emotional, physical, language, literacy, math, and cognitive skills. In addition, at-risk students who participated in preschool performed better on CMAS reading and math tests when they reached third-grade than at-risk third-graders who had not attended preschool.
